Contains general provisions, substantive standards for each industrial property right, disciplines for legal protection (unifying the standards found in each special law), and the conditions for acquisition and preservation of the validity of rights and relative procedures.

Establishes a single procedure for the granting of patents in Europe and regulates their use. It entered into force on 7 October 1977, recovering the indications of the 1963 Strasbourg Convention.

A multilateral international treaty for unified filing of patent applications, valid in one or more of the states that signed the Treaty. It was signed in Washington, in 1970, and is managed by WIPO – World Intellectual Property Organization.
